Phising – by Nannette Filbeck

July 6th, 2009

Computer security and protecting sensitive information is a concern here at Affinity, but should be a concern of all PC users.

You may have been prompted to “turn on phishing filters” when you accessed the internet on your computer recently. You may have selected to turn the filter on because it was “recommended” by Microsoft but wondered what is phishing (pronounced fishing)

Phishing is a form of identity theft – a way to steal your personal information including your credit card numbers, on-line banking passwords and even your Social Security numbers.

Just like a fisherman uses a lure that resembles an actual fish or insect to attract fish, a phisher creates phony websites that look very similar to the genuine sites. Then he sends you an official looking email with a link to his phony website. Once you are in the website, you may be asked to type in your username and password, Social Security number, credit card account number, etc. Just like a fish – you are hooked!

Now the phisher has the password to your account or he may download software (spyware or crimeware) on your computer to collect information without your knowledge. APWG (Anti Phising Work Group) reported the number of crimeware -spreading sites infecting PCs with password-stealing crimeware increased by 827% from January to December 2008. APWG suggests the following anti-phishing steps:

1. Don’t trust links in an email2. Never give out personal information upon email request
3. Look carefully at the web address. Phishers like to create web addresses that look very similar to the legitimate ones: http://www.welllsfargo.com or http://annazon.com.
4. Type the real address into your web browser
5. Don’t call company phone numbers in email or instant messages. Use a phone book or the numbers shown on your credit card statement
6. Don’t open unexpected email attachments.
7. Don’t disable your antivirus program. Let your schedule scans run

Simple steps may help you avoid becoming the victim of identity theft!

At Affinity, we embrace Lean Manufacturing and are nearing completion of Phase 1 of our production floor reconfiguration. Implementing Lean Manufacturing has already added benefits of increased throughput, reduced inventory and higher product quality.

Phase II will further build on our Lean efforts, reducing lead times for our customers by smoothing the flow of products through the plant. Besides improving production, embracing Lean Manufacturing has improved our cultural landscape with greater involvement by every team member.

Our Lean journey continues to the benefit of the company, our team members and our valued customer partners.

My Job – Affinity Medical Administrative Assistant – by Janett Lopez

June 29th, 2009

I enjoy working for Affinity Medical as Administrative Assistant very much. Affinity is like my second home. When you call Affinity, I am usually the first person you will speak with because one of my jobs is to answer the phone! At Affinity I have the opportunity to learn a lot of new things every day. I also like to help others when they need me.

Every day is an adventure at Affinity. We are very bu6-29-09-janet1sy and there is always a lot of activity. I enjoy meeting our customers when they visit or come to perform quality audits. Often, when we have guests visiting for more than a few hours, we bring in lunch to save time. I really enjoy this part of my job because everyone is happy after a good lunch.

June Cruise with our Grandchildren – by Mary Phillipp

My husband Dave Johnson and I will be cruising with our 5 Grandchildren from Montreal to Boston this month. They range in ages from 11 to 21. It is our goal to spend at least one week a year with our grandchildren (without their parents) and provide an opportunity for the cousins to spend time together.

A few of the previous fun “Grandkid Adventures” were to the National Parks in Utah, a Caribbean Cruise and a Minnesota lake cabin. Spending time with kids helps us to think and stay young!

A few days ago, (let’s call her Maria) Maria came to work to inform us that she was regretfully terminating her employment, effective immediately. Maria has worked at Affinity for many years and she had no intention of leaving anytime soon. That all changed with the purchase of a lottery ticket. Maria is now a millionaire and is looking forward to family time and volunteer work. Congratulations Maria, the Affinity Team will miss you!
