Coastal Hike with the Affinity Sales Team – by Bob Frank

Joann Frank, Marcus Huber, Lorenz Huber and Cesar Jara

We are pleased to have recently entered into a partnership with MPS Terminal from Germany to support the development of OEM customers in central Europe.  To kick-off the relationship we recently hosted the first “Affinity Global Sales Meeting” at our new facility in Costa Mesa.  To ensure a productive week of sessions, we scheduled a Team Hike Sunday morning followed by a Barbeque later in the afternoon.

I decided to organize a hike at one of our favorite local beach spots:  Crystal Cove State Park.  This beach is a nearly pristine, relatively undeveloped stretch of coastline along the ocean bluffs of El Moro Canyon with unusual geological formations and a bit of Orange County history.  After a short continental breakfast in the parking lot our group of 10 decided to forge ahead on the 4.2 mile hike.  We started by heading north on a paved trail through waist high Salt Bush and other flowering vegetation.  The fresh breeze of salty ocean air combined with the smell of sage is refreshing.  The temperature was cool but perfect for walking.  This was a great opportunity to reconnect with our European guests in a most comfortable setting.  So comfortable in fact that about 20 minutes into the hike Cesar Jara asked, “Where’s Hank”.  In our excitement to start our excursion we failed to realize that we left Hank at the restrooms.  After a good chuckle we reconnected and resumed our walk. Thank goodness he’s a good sport.

We continued our journey to the northern most point of the trail, adjacent to the Pelican Hill Golf Course.  We took a short break and watched the pelicans cruise by barely skimming the waters of the Pacific. I recall my rebellious past when my friends and I would (illegally) dive from the rocks into the ocean, dodging the local Coast Guard.  As we continue south on the beach we split up into smaller groups either talking and enjoying the morning.  Roberto Henker misjudges a wave and is knee deep in the surf before he realizes what has happened.  This gives him ample justification to complete the hike barefoot.  We ended our trek at the historic Cottages of Crystal Cove.  This is a truly charming location with a small well known restaurant surrounded by a few shacks where the local artists peddle their latest crafts.

Later that afternoon we resumed our day of fun with a fantastic BBQ at Mary and Dave’s place, but that’s a story for another Blog.  And I almost forgot, the sales meeting was a great success as well.

Regarding the history of Crystal Cove, originally the land was leased by the Mexican Government to a cattle rancher.  When the rancher went into debt the land was sold to a group of investors, one of which was James Irvine.  Crystal Cove would eventually become part of the mammoth Irvine Ranch that spread throughout much of central Orange County.  More recently the Irvine Company had leased the land in 1920 to a private beach resort that had built beachfront cottages that were occupied full-time by local residents.  About 10 years ago the land was purchased by the State of California and the residents were evicted after a lengthy court battle.  Today the cottages have been renovated and the public can rent them through the State Parks Services.  They are considered one of the local “well kept secrets” if you are lucky enough to get a reservation, even in the winter months.

First of Two New Mold Machines Arrive – by Hank Mancini

July 5th, 2011

New Arburg 28 ton Press

Continuing to expand capacity and capabilities, the first of two new molding machines arrived and was installed in the past week.  The new Arburg, also known as “Machine 8”, is in the process of installation and operational qualification activities before being placed in service.

“We need the extra molding capacity,” said Affinity Manufacturing Manager, Kevin Kom.  “Not only will the Arburg give us that capacity, it will give us additional capabilities.

When asked about the new mold machines, Affinity engineer Matt Pathmajeyan commented, “Our new Arburg’s will help us in processing state of the art polymers.  We ordered the machines with a reduced shot capacity that will give us tighter controls when molding smaller assemblies.”

Affinity Celebrates 14 Year Anniversary – by Mary Phillipp

May 26th, 2011

The Affinity team on the company's 14th Anniversary - May 19, 2011

On Thursday May 19th Affinity celebrated its 14th Anniversary with an all employee lunch and meeting.

It was a time to both reminisce and look forward.  Affinity started in a 400 square foot office with 3 borrowed desks in Tustin in 1997.  We moved to Irvine into a 5,000 square foot manufacturing facility a few months later.  That served as Affinity’s base until 2000 when we moved to a 24,000 square foot facility.  In February we moved into our great new space of almost 45,000 square feet in Costa Mesa.

It has been an incredible adventure to start and grow Affinity.  We now have over 230 Customer Partners worldwide and over 240 Employee Partners.

It was exciting and festive to bring 1st and 2nd shifts together for the first time since we moved.  Our lunch/training room was filled with happy, smiling faces!

We are looking forward to more exciting opportunities and challenges in the years and months ahead.

We’ve Been Hiring – by Hank Mancini

August 11th, 2009

Thanks to our customer partners, Affinity’s business has been strong and we have been hiring most of the year. We’ve added about twenty to the Affinity team this year and see the need to add even more. With unemployment at record levels we feel very fortunate to be able to offer good jobs to good people.

One of the reasons our business seems to be strong is that many of our new customers have decided to buy domestically after experiencing problems sourcing in Asia. There is a saying in the industry that seems to be proving true. Asian manufactures can offer a good price, high quality and fast delivery – pick one. We do our best to offer our customers all three and it seems to be paying off. We’re hiring.

Behind the Scenes of Manufacturing is Accounting – by Syeda Meherunnisa

July 13th, 2009

People know Affinity as a manufacturer of medical cables. As a manufacturer, we produce products, but there is lot of behind the scenes activities that makes our company successful. One of these activities is accounting. Proper accounting has a direct impact on our company’s financial state, future prospects and even our jobs.

Accounting is the language of business. It is a service whose function is to provide quantitative information which can be used to make decisions. There are many activities in accounting but most important are accounts payable and accounts receivable.

Accounts payable are amounts a company owes to others because it purchased goods or services on credit from a supplier or vendor. Accounts receivable are amounts a company is owed by others because it sold goods or services on credit to a customer.
Accounts payable are liabilities. Accounts receivable are assets.

For a company to be successful it must collect money owed to it by customers and most successful companies also pay their bills on time!

The Joy of Quality Audits – by Cindy Oldynski

July 9th, 2009

cindy-for-blog

One of the aspects of my job here at Affinity that I really enjoy is participating in audits. I am the management representative and the contact person when customers, notified bodies, federal or state agencies want to schedule an audit.

Affinity Medical is FDA registered and certified to ISO13485:2003. Our ISO registrar, BSI, audits our quality system twice a year to ISO 13485. We usually have at least one customer audit per month and we perform internal audits each quarter. Each audit is an opportunity to learn and challenge our systems. Having a robust quality system makes us a better partner for our customers.

My Job – Affinity Medical Administrative Assistant – by Janett Lopez

June 29th, 2009

I enjoy working for Affinity Medical as Administrative Assistant very much. Affinity is like my second home. When you call Affinity, I am usually the first person you will speak with because one of my jobs is to answer the phone! At Affinity I have the opportunity to learn a lot of new things every day. I also like to help others when they need me.

Every day is an adventure at Affinity. We are very bu6-29-09-janet1sy and there is always a lot of activity. I enjoy meeting our customers when they visit or come to perform quality audits. Often, when we have guests visiting for more than a few hours, we bring in lunch to save time. I really enjoy this part of my job because everyone is happy after a good lunch.
